Baroness Emmuska Orczy (September 23, 1865 – November 12, 1947) was a Hungarian-British novelist who became a pioneering figure in early 20th-century mystery. She introduced Lady Molly of Scotland Yard, one of the first professional female sleuths, and the 'Old Man in the Corner,' who mastered the art of the armchair detective. By solving complex crimes through pure logic and conversation without ever leaving his seat, the Old Man became a unique archetype in the genre. Orczy’s work significantly advanced the development of intellectual puzzles, proving that the sharpest mind—regardless of gender or location—could crack any case.
